LABEL-AIRE 3138 PRINT & APPLY APPLICATOR

An international copper fitting manufacturer required a variably printed label to be applied to the tops of 12 sizes of fittings that included elbows, tees, crosses, and couplings. Product sizes ranged from 1.5" (38 mm) in diameter to 3" (76 mm) in diameter.

The Solution

Label-Aire designed a turnkey system which includes a Model 3138 Print & Apply applicator mounted on vertical and horizontal gib slides for precision adjustment. Currently, the products products are hand loaded onto a 6" (152 mm) wide by 10' (3 m) long conveyor and positioned with adjustable custom guide rails. The bar code labels are printed and applied to the products and then scanned by a Microscan bar code reader. The bar-coded product is verified for correctness and is air-cylinder ejected onto an eject chute if a match is not verified. A missing label detection device is also incorporated into the system and the product is also ejected if a label is not detected on the product. A secondary motorized foam impressor wheel completes the label lay down.

The Challenge

A national DVD & CD manufacturing company required a labeling system to apply pre-printed security warning labels and also print and apply bar code labels to the tops and bottoms of DVD movie cases. What was needed was a versatile, fast, and reliable labeling system.

The Solution

Label-Aire's custom solution was to modify its new Inline Series 6000 open-frame labeling system for apply-only and print-and-apply labeling. The pre-printed security warning labels are handled by Label-Aire's New Generation 3114 Tamp-Blow applicator while the bar code labels are applied using the all-new 3138-N printer applicator. By combining Label-Aire's proven inline conveyor technology with the 3114 and 3138-N, the end result is the versatile, fast, and reliable labeling system the customer was looking for. The Label-Aire 3-Panel DVD Case Labeling System applies labels to the tops and bottoms of DVD movie cases at speeds up to 80 ppm. The 3-panel application of each label takes place when the unit's two pneumatic wipe down stations perform their duty by ensuring that the labels have adhered to the front and back sides of the DVD case. Label placement accuracy is +/- 1/32" (.8 mm).
